Oil seals or rotary shaft seals are made from synthetic elastomers bonded to a case which is usually metal. They are used in many applications under very varied conditions. The main function of an oil seal is to exclude the ingress of dirt, dust, water or any other external contamination whilst maintaining lubricant for the seal lip and protecting the rotating bearings.
