When considering a choice of compound, both high and low limits as well as operating temperature must be taken into consideration, together with the anticipated time element of each extreme. The parameters shown in the chart below are based upon average conditions for a period of approximately one thousand hours. Most base polymers will be capable of exceeding the recommended temperature guide for short intermittent periods.

Another important point to be considered in very critical
conditions is the fact that rubber when exposed to extended periods of high
temperature will expand, and therefore it may be necessary to increase the area
of the groove, and in opposing conditions rubber exposed to prolonged periods of
low temperature will tend to contract and a reduction of groove size may be
desirable, or alternatively a higher degree of squeeze should be allowed for
during initial design.
